Pro bios means "for life"
The term probiotic was first used in the 1960s. It is derived from the Greek word pro bios, which literally means "for life."
A brief history of the term probiotics
Although the terminology itself is new, mankind, practically since the dawn of time, has used foods containing live cultures of bacteria and fungi.
In 2001, the term probiotic was approved by the WHO (World Health Organization).
It is now accepted that probiotics are all living microorganisms that, if given in adequate amounts, will provide health benefits to the host.
Where can we find probiotics?
Probiotics can be found both in natural products e.g. yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, cucumbers, miso, kimchi, etc., but can also be purchased in the form of powders, capsules, tablets or dedicated shots, as well as drinks containing them.
