What is the gastrointestinal microbiome?

In the article, I discuss what goes into the digestive microbiome and what its role is.

The human microbiome - a mini-cosmos

The gastrointestinal microbiome, especially in humans, is one of the most diverse examples of the correlation of microorganisms and the human body itself.

The more I explore how it works, the more interesting information based on research I learn (and I don't stop learning).

Composition of the gastrointestinal microbiome

The microbiome of the digestive system consists of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and archaeons.

The composition of the microbiome, qualitatively and quantitatively, depends on several factors such as:

  • Age,
  • gender,
  • lifestyle,
  • health status,
  • The environment in which one resides.

The microbiome found in the gastrointestinal tract significantly determines the state of the human body, as it affects many factors related to health.

The role of the gastrointestinal microbiome

The microorganisms in our digestive system are responsible for, among other things, the absorption of nutrients.

They improve the absorption of vitamins, minerals, water and electrolytes throughout the small and large intestines, where the microbiome is most accumulated in the human body.

In addition, they affect the body's immunity and support the body's detoxification process by maintaining the proper pH in the digestive system.

Summary

The gastrointestinal microbiome is particularly important for the proper functioning of the body.

One should stick to the principle:

as you take care, so you have!

That's why it's important to remember how significant a role microorganisms play in each of us.
